Sharks fire coach David Quinn after two seasons

The San Jose Sharks fired coach David Quinn on Wednesday following their worst season this century.

Quinn, 57, compiled a record of 41-98-25 in two seasons behind the bench.

That included a 19-54-9 mark in 2023-24 for an NHL-worst 47 points, the fewest for San Jose since recording the same number in 1995-96.

"After going through our end of the season process of internal meetings and evaluating where our team is at and where we want our group to go, we have made the difficult decision to make a change at the head coach position," general manager Mike Grier said in a news release.

"David is a good coach and an even better person. I would like to personally thank him for his hard work over these past two seasons. He and his staff did an admirable job under some difficult circumstances, and I sincerely appreciate how they handled the situation."

The Sharks scored 2.20 goals per game this season, better than only the Chicago Blackhawks at 2.17. They allowed a league-worst 3.98 goals per game.

Quinn previously coached the New York Rangers for three seasons, going 96-87-25 with one playoff appearance from 2018-19 through 2020-21.

The Sharks have not been to the Stanley Cup Playoffs since reaching the 2019 Western Conference finals.

Grier also announced that head athletic trainer Ray Tufts will not return to the team.
